Ryo Kawada,

Bambinart Gallery is pleased to present "Guise", a solo exhibition by Ryo Kawada.

Ryo Kawada was born in 1988 in Niigata prefecture and went to Tokyo Zokei University. Now he goes to the graduate school of the Tokyo University of Arts, working on painting projects. He has received Future Prize for the Turner Award in 2013 and Hisashi Tenmyoya Prize in TAMA ART COMPETITION as well as getting a place in Tokyo Wonder Wall in 2014 and in the Second CAF prize in 2015. He is a successful young artist to watch.

First it seems that Ryo paints ordinary everyday scenes, but the characters in them are usually undefinable - which shows that he does not use his personal feelings and connections for his work. His work is unique in its rough touch and its monochrome impression that gives some unsettling feelings. Ryo draws things by first developing motifs in which he lies deliberately. He yet leaves some hints, although they themselves are also highly pregnant, which are developed borrowing various classical styles from religious artwork, portraits and still-life drawings. Sometimes, though, the titles of the work or the exhibition can resolve the mystery - for example, the title of this exhibition, Guise, can mean that how things look can be false or fake and therefore, can suggest that he does not necessarily assign a meaning on the subject of painting or maybe he even suggest that they are actually nothing.

What I am drawing or who I am drawing has no particular meaning. By drawing what I can reach or something that is fake, I attempt to find out the difference between the real and unreal - which I find real. - Ryo Kawada

Enjoy our first exhibition of new artwork for the past one and half years.
