Tatsuma Takeda was born in Amakusa-gun, Kumamoto in 1988. He mainly worked with painting during enrolled at Tama University of Art, and awarded a grand prize for Tokyo Wander Wall in 2011. In complete contrast, he exhibited an installation work which using sculpture and video picture to approach to reinterpretation of the “Maria” Kannon based on history of Amakusa where he was born at the graduation show. After graduated, he went to Germany, and then currently enrolls at Dresden Academy of Fine Art and study under Martin HONERT.

At this show, he exhibits the “empty” series which based on religious painting. For Takeda who performs daily life in Germany with having indelible scene of his childhood at Amakusa where he was born and raised, the existence of religious painting looks interesting.

“ I feel “Religious Painting” that completes radical roles and today exists as museum’s collection=Art work affects a feeling of emptiness in front of viewers in contrast with the noble image drawn in them. To illustrate the gap arises between side to appreciate and side to be appreciated, it would be able to discover religious outlook of people lives today which different from around those days. Also in the meanwhile, it would tend toward returning to the primordial issue of what painting is.” (Tatsuma Takeda)

For the empty series, the works created based on paintings that Takeda saw at museum in Germany, and they were drawn on posters or postcards. By living in the town, visiting to museum, and appreciating again and again, how the paintings are positioned by museums and viewers nowadays, and how they are appreciated, the image of our time are illustrated from the side of painting.
