Bambinart Gallery is pleased to present “Trinitite ― unsung memory and form ―” a solo exhibition by Kota Hirakawa.

Kota Hirakawa (b. 1987, Saitama prefecture) is a graduate of the graduate school of Tokyo University of Arts (2013) who has won the grand prize in the Golden Competition held 2012, as well as the jury's prize at Sonpo Japan Art Exhibition and Mitsubishi prize at Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi in 2013.

Hirakawa has been zealous in connecting his works with Japanese history and society, previously organizing installations in the Maruki Gallery for the Hiroshima Panels (Saitama prefecture) and a project titled "Art Climbing a Mountain" which toured the Kiyosumi and Shaka temples of the Nichiren sect.

In 2009, Hirakawa encountered a man-made mineral called "Trinitite" during his research tour in Hiroshima. Tirinitite is a mineral created out of melted desert sand during the first atomic bomb experiment in the United States 1945.
He saw the history of death and Japan's postwar art history encapsulated in the beauty of the mineral, which led to his works presented in this exhibition.

The show's main piece is the "Trinitite" series in which Hirakawa recreates war paintings by the Japanese army in monochrome.
By repainting works created by artists who lived through World War II, Hirakawa attempts to recapture the past as a younger generation born after the mournful history.

August being the Japanese month of mourning, this exhibition provides us with the chance to reconsider this country's past, not to mention its future.
